Discipleship Centre, Delhi

Partner/Church/Project name: Discipleship Centre,
Place:  Delhi, India

Discipleship Centre (DC) is a thirty-three year-old Christian organization working for the upliftment of the poor and the marginalized without discrimination of race, religion, caste, gender, colour or region.

We believe in holistic development of communities, respecting, nurturing and building people. Our integrated community programs strive for sustainable development to empower the poor and the vulnerable through community participation and resource mobilization both in the rural areas of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Orissa, and the Tsunami hit coastal belts of India.

Our response to disasters is one of building hope and standing with the afflicted and the marginalized in their hour of acute grief and pain. Our relief has a norm – it blurs down the barriers between relief and development, and together with the community we facilitate in rebuilding the lost world of the poor through relief, rehabilitation and livelihood interventions. Our primary focus during the relief and rehabilitation operations is women, children and the disabled.

DC is also working in the midst of the urban poor, living in the slums of Delhi.  Our Mahila Mandal (Women’s group) and Mahila Panchayat (the grass root legal wing for women) own the programs thus ensuring future sustainability.  We also have a vast array of skill training programs enabling the trained girls to be successfully employed outside their homes thus weaning them away from being employed as unskilled workers in the private sectors.

The thread of spiritual nurturing flows through every activity and program of DC.  We realize that ultimately every effort towards upliftment of the poor is in vain unless the people in whose midst we work experience the joy of salvation.

In the end we would also like to mention that DC is also working amongst the visually impaired.  We publish a monthly Braille magazine and newsletter which is sent to 1500 of our visually impaired contacts.  We also train our visually impaired friends in typing, shorthand and computers. We have regular counselling for those of our visually handicapped friends who require advice on various issues.

Kindly pray for all our activities as mentioned above and specifically also pray as we reach out to the un-reached through our various projects, thus trying to build them up both economically and spiritually. Please pray for the chess tournament that we are organizing for the visually impaired.  We hope to build up our visually handicapped friends and bring out their hidden talents which the Lord has given them.
