What is the Global poverty prayer chain?

‘When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action.’ (Matthew 18:18, The Message)

You may wonder why an organisation taking action on poverty is asking you to pray as a response, but we believe that by praying first the action that follows will be more effective. We’re inviting you to join a Global poverty prayer chain, with Christians and churches around the world, in one plea to God.

Imagine Christians around the world all praying for the same thing, all at the same time. The Global poverty prayer chain will stretch from Manchester to Malawi, London to Liberia and we’ll ask God to equip his church – wherever we are.

Tearfund believes that local churches are God’s tool of choice for dealing with poverty. Through prayer and action, lives will be transformed for ever.

Prayer changes things

How often do you have a really good look at your hands? Go on, have a sneaky peak right now. Weird, aren’t they?

Think about all the things they do, all the talent and potential they represent. Yet right now they probably just look plain and empty; they look kind of unimpressive.

Prayer’s like that. Kind of.

Look at it on its own and it’s kind of ordinary – just a collection of words and thoughts and ideas and feelings. But it’s got potential. Lots of potential.

  • Prayer can stir up hearts
  • Prayer can change lives
  • Prayer can end poverty

How? God.

God does it. Prayer works because of the one we’re praying to. And it gets us closer to God too. No wonder Jesus told his disciples to do plenty of it – just take a look at what he says about it in Luke 18.

What are we praying for?

In the Resources section of this website you'll find some examples of areas of the world where prayer has been transforming lives, and also where prayer is still required. We'll be putting more stories every fortnight, and later in the year we'll be revisiting some of these stories to see just what impact your prayers have had.

We also want you to pray for the millions of other Christians around the world who are living among the poor. We want to pray for transformation. We want to pray that ordinary lives will unite to tackle poverty head on. We want – and hold tight now, for this one’s a biggy - to see 50 million people released from poverty through the work of 100,000 groups of Christians all over the world. That's Tearfund's new vision, but we can't achieve this without prayer.

And we want you to pray for you and the people like you. Pray that you and your friends and the rest of the church gets it. Pray that you all get fired up and determined to do something about global poverty.

That's what this website and our the Be part of a miracle is all about. So commit to praying, get your friends and your church involved - see if you can get them to commit to praying for our vision and getting on the map. Get creative with your prayers - from prayer meals to 24-7 prayer, decide what works best for you, your friends and your church group. Tell others about this website, and join the Global poverty prayer chain by sending in your prayers.

These webpages that you're viewing now...they could be the start of something miraculous.
